The Synonyms tab allows for adding, editing, and removing of synonyms for individual locales and also for global synonyms (those used with all locales).
Synonyms are used to extend searches of a phrase to include similar search phrases. A synonym includes a locale, a search phrase, and one or more synonym phrases that are used together with a specific search phrase.
The Synonyms tab is where you add, edit and remove synonyms for individual locales and also globally. Global editing is based on user access set in Admin > User admin.
Excel files with synonyms can be imported using the menu in the top right corner.
CSV files can be both imported and exported with the menu in the top right corner.
Active and inactive synonyms
The status of a synonym is either "active" or "inactive". A synonym must be "active" to be used with search functions. Setting synonyms as "inactive" is useful when they are seasonally used and are currently not needed, instead of removing them and re-adding them. This is done per phrase.
Best practices
- Assign synonyms to words or phrases that have linguistic variations, such as: American and British English, French and Canadian French. For example, "sneakers" vs "trainers" (American / British), "cellulaire" vs "portable" (Canadian French / French for mobile phone).
- Avoid broader terms or generalisation as synonyms. For example, do not add "shorts" as synonym of "bicycle shorts" or "accessories" as a synonym of "bandana".
- Avoid adding plural forms as a synonym to a keyword. For example, there is no need to add "maxi dresses" as a synonym of "maxi dress".
- Avoid adding the same synonym both to its singular and plural forms. For example, you don't need to add "long dress" as a synonym for both "maxi dress" and "maxi dresses".
