Tweak recommendations

Retailers and brands often need to control which products appear in recommendation modules on product pages. This can include restricting competitor products, highlighting specific assortments, or curating brand-consistent experiences. The Tweak Recommendations tool allows you to customize recommendations for selected products and even target specific recommendation algorithms.

This page is found under the Pages tab:

What you can customize

Different recommendation algorithms serve different purposes. Some rely heavily on shoppers' personal data, like Recently Viewed, while others are more structured, like Series Recommendations. Tweak Recommendations applies to algorithms where product-to-product logic is most relevant. Currently supported types include:

  • Upsell
  • Alternatives
  • Top products
  • Add-to-Cart Recommendations

You can now set separate tweaks per algorithm, allowing more precise control. For example, the target products for Add-to-Cart Recommendations (which support complementary upselling) may differ significantly from those for Alternatives (which show similar products).

Usage constraints

  • Tweaks apply only to recommendations shown on product pages and in the add-to-cart popup.
  • You can have a maximum of 20 active tweaks per market.
  • Only one user at a time can create or modify tweaks.
  • If multiple tweaks apply to the same product, the highest-priority tweak takes effect. You can reorder tweaks by dragging the handle on the left.

CAUTION

Elevate's recommendation algorithms are optimized for performance. Over-curating recommendations may negatively impact conversions and revenue. Use tweaks only when business logic or branding requires it.

How it works

The Tweak Recommendations tool lets you define custom product rules for specific recommendation algorithms on selected products. Each tweak consists of two parts: which products the rule applies to, and which products are allowed to appear as recommendations. You can also choose to apply different rules for different recommendation types—giving you granular control over what’s shown to shoppers.

Affected products

In this section, you select the products that the tweak will apply to. These are typically key products where you want greater control over associated recommendations.

Filter to apply > filter

Here, you define which products can be shown in the recommendation slots for the affected products. This is done using product filters (e.g., brand, category, attributes).

You can now specify different filters per algorithm, giving you fine-grained control. For example:

For Upsell: allow only premium accessories from Brand X
For Alternatives: exclude competitor products or low-margin items

CAUTION

Be mindful of filter strictness: If your filter is too narrow (e.g., only yellow shoes from Brand A), there may not be enough eligible products to populate the recommendation slots, especially for algorithms like Upsell that expect a diverse result set.

Editing a tweak

To create or modify a tweak:

  1. Select the affected product(s).
  2. Choose the algorithm(s) you want to customize.
  3. Apply a filter to define which products can appear.
  4. Save your changes.

Drag and reorder tweaks if you need to change priority.
