Autocomplete helps customers quickly find what they’re looking for by suggesting relevant terms, products, and content as they type. It improves the user experience by reducing typing effort, preventing misspellings, and surfacing high-converting results instantly.
What Autocomplete includes
As the customer starts typing in the search bar, they immediately gets a number of suggestions in the autocomplete dropdown. The structure of the dropdown, including the grouping and the ranking, is generated by Elevate. The suggestions all come from Elevate, and include:
- Phrase suggestions
Commonly searched terms that help complete the user’s input. - Product suggestions
Matching items, often displayed with product names, prices, and images. - Trending searches
Popular terms shown when the search field is empty. - Recent searches
Personal search history for identified visitors. - Content searches
User guides, help articles
Autocorrect and “Did you mean”
To ensure that even imperfect inputs return relevant content for the customer, Elevate automatically corrects typos and suggest alternatives using "Did you mean" logic. In practice, this means that if a customer types a misspelled or incomplete query, autocomplete can:
- Autocorrect it and automatically display matching results
- Offer alternative suggestions using “Did you mean…” links to steer the customer in the right direction
What is powered by Elevate?
The following functionality is returned in a single response from Elevate and rendered by your website frontend:
- All suggestions (products, categories, brands, content, phrases)
- Autocorrect and Did-you-mean logic
- Trending and recent searches
- The structure of the dropdown, including how content is grouped and ranked
